Practical introduction to the translation of different types of cultural and literary texts. For more details, please see the course descriptions for TRAD0113-A-a et TRAD0113-B-b.
Culture
The course focuses on the translation of cultural texts and its linguistic and ethical challenges, in particular the issue of multilingualism in translation.
Literary translation
The course will take the form of a translation workshop and focuses on the specific (linguistic, cultural, professional) issues related to the translation of literary texts from Dutch into French and on translational norms in the field of literary translation.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Culture
By the end of the course, the students will have developed intercultural skills, enriched their theoretical (cultural translation, transfers, hybridity, etc.) and technical (translation of realia and heterolinguisms) backgrounds, and developed their critical thinking skills.
Literary translation
By the end of the course, the students will be able to grasp the challenges of literary translation from Dutch into French and will have developed a set of translation techniques related to the literary context.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Culture
Good passive knowledge of Dutch and excellent active knowledge of French.
Literary translation
Excellent knowledge of French (active) and Dutch (passive).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Culture
The course includes readings, watching videos, presentations and discussions on the issues of cultural translation. On the other hands, the course consists of a translation workshop organised around themes related to current and historical artistic and cultural events in the Dutch-speaking world.
Literary translation
The course will mainly take the form of a translation workshop. A few introductory lectures (on Dutch-language literature, the status of literary translators, narratology, translation standards, etc.) will occasionally enrich the exchanges between students and teachers.

A written exam consisting of the translation of a cultural text and a questionnaire on the translation issues of this text.
This teaching unit ("Unité d'enseignement," or UE) is subject to the principle of the "note absorbante," which means that the student having obtained a mark below 8/20 for one of the learning activities ("activités d'apprentissage," or AA) will receive a failing grade for the entire unit and will have to retake the failed AA in the second session regardless of the mathematical average of the two AA grades
