Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The course Stages et travaux personnels within the 1st year of the Master en sciences physiques à finalité approfondie/didactique consists in the realization of a synthesis work on a specific subject linked to the research topics that are investigated by the members of the Physics Department. The focus will be put on
- the explanation of the physical process underlying the research topics under consideration and/or
- the participation at a current experiment or a current theoretical investigation, with explanations of the research issues under consideration and an understanding of the underlying physical phenomena.
As opposed to the master thesis in the second year of the master, the course Stages et travaux personnels does not consist in the realization of original developments on an ongoing research topic. The accent is put on the understanding of the physical processes linked to the chosen subject, in order to allow for the student to familiarize him- or herself with a given research domain that is under study at the physics department.
In addition to the scientific objective, a second learning outcome of this course is to be able to write scientific text in English. The document to be realized will therefore be examined not only for its scientif quality but also for the quality of its English language.

Additional information:

1. The synthesis work is done under the supervision of a member of the Physics Department, who has accomplished a doctoral thesis in physics.

2. The choice of the subject and the supervisor has to be done by October 15th latest. This choice is communicated to the president of the student council of the masters in physical sciences, who is the coordinator of this course, and submitted for approbation to the Student Council. If one supervisor supervises several works, those have to be clearly different.

3. The synthesis work is carried out by a stay in the chosen research laboratory, which takes at least 2 weeks and at most 3 weeks. During the academic year, a course-free week is provided with the aim of allowing for a week of presence in the lab without interruption.

4. The synthesis work is done in the form of a LaTeX report. This report must be written such that its content is understandable by all physicists and not only by the specialists of the chosen domain. The length of the report is at least 10 pages and at most 20 pages (class "article", single column, A4 format, standard margins of 2.5cm, 11pt font, table of contents not counted in the number of pages). The report has to be written in English. It contains an introduction, a body of main text, a conclusion, and a bibliography.

5. The work is submitted to the coordinator, at a date in the spring term that is fixed on the first meeting of the student council.

6. Under the supervision of the coordinator, the work is graded to 50 percent for its scientifiic quality and to 50 percent for the quality of the English text (grammar, spelling, ...). The scientifc evaluation is done by the fixed point, taking into account the opinion of the supervisor. The fixed point is a member of the Physics Department that is designated by the student council. This fixed point changes from year to year. The evaluation of the English language is done by the ISLV. The grades are put together by the coordinator who encodes them into the electronic system of deliberations.
