Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The course consists in an ensemble of seminars addressing various basic topics of importance for space activities. The course structure is modular and some topics covered may change every year in function of space news and speakers opportunities. Here is a non-exhaustive list of topics:

1) the "space landscape": major institutions and agencies (World, Europe, Belgium), their history, their programmes; the new space, space law, military space,...

2) what is a space project, how is it managed, the quality aspects,...

3) some scientific and technical topics (ground segments, cubesats-smallsats, detectors, space/radiation environment, ....)

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Our objective shall be to offer to the student a background and culture allowing him to address the various aspects of a space career. Accordingly, the topics shall not be addressed from first principles (in which case could have covered a complete course), but to develop a cultural basis and providing to those interested guidelines and references to develop their knowledge. The student shall also be better armed to gravitate in the operational context of a space career.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Standard physics background for students in physics or engineer science at Bac+3 level.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course shall be dispensed orally, in lessons of 2 hours each, according to a planning to be agreed upon with the students.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

The teaching shall be face-to-face.

Recommended or required readings

Useful references shall be given at each lecture. Course materials (copies of Powerpoint presentations) shall be made available on-line.

Exam(s) in session

Any session

- In-person

oral exam

Written work / report

Additional information:

The evaluation will be done on the basis of a written work and an oral presentation.

1) The written work, to be performed at home, will consist in preparing a few pages article on a topic chosen by the student, in agreement with the lecturer. The topics will be related to space activities (recent achievements, technical topic, etc), possibly investigating further a topic discussed in the lectures. The student will receive a template for writing the article.

2) The oral examination will consist in presenting the work to the lecturer and other students.

Work placement(s)

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

The lectures shall be dispensed, in alternance and based on expertise, by Marc Georges, possibly with the participation of an external speaker. Depending on opportunities, the lectures could consist in little workshops with several speakers on a particular recent topic.
