Learning unit contents

The main theoretical chapters are as follows:

Partim 1
Introduction
1. Observation of the atmosphere
2. Energy balance of the atmosphere and the earth's surface
3. Thermodynamics of the atmosphere and vertical stability

Partim 2
4. The fundamental equations of the atmosphere
5. Atmospheric motion theory 
(geostrophic approximation, thermal wind, atmospheric waves, etc)
6. The planetary boundary layer (atmospheric turbulence)
7. Saturation and condensation processes
8. Large-scale atmospheric circulation  

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The objective of the course is an introduction to atmopheric dynamics and meteorological processes.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Good knowledge of mathematics and mechanics, basic knowledge of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics (especially for partim 2).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Exercises linked to the various chapters.
