Learning unit contents

2016-2017 Theme: The challenges of African Universities Today.
This module is meant to teach student to build a research project and the methodology that goes with it. This years' fieldwork will be "African universities and their current challenges". The seminar will include several working sessions, which students will have to prepare for in advance. It will also take into account recent activities of the lecturer and his team within African universities, including talks from visiting professors and researchers.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

This seminar is meant to teach students to state research questions, hypotheses, to choose their methods accordingly, define the issue that they want to look at and the exact fieldwork that they want to do. This will eventually get them acquainted with this year's theme (the challenges of African universities today) and teach them the necessary socio-historical knowledge that relates to it. The first sessions will be about finding research issues and areas of interests that are relevant to the general theme of African universities, then about defining more specific entries (including international cooperation between universities) which students will be able to look at through their participation in class and in their final essay. Other sessions will allow them to work on scientific articles (reflecting on different research methods on development in Africa, for example). Some sessions, finally, will include presentations from PHD students, visiting professors or researchers.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Having followed at least one methodology course for social sciences, including qualitative research methods.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

This module will be taught like a research seminar. It will include collective debates and brainstorming on the basis of what students will have prepared at home (research, readings, etc.)

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

Four seminar sessions will be scheduled at least two weeks away from each other to allow student to prepare for each step/activity.
