Table of contents I: Constitution of the Central Nervous System (CNS) II: Neuronal excitability and synaptic transmission - the different types of receptors III: Introduction to Pharmacodynamy IV: Introduction to Pharmacokinetics V: Brain monoaminergic (MA) and cholinergic systems VI: Drugs acting on MA and cholinergic systems (antiparkinsonian drugs, antipsychotics, antidepressants, psychostimulants, psychodysleptics, nicotine, medications for Alzheimer's disease) VII: Glutamate and "dissociative anaesthetics" VIII: GABA - anxiolytics/hypnotics - antiepileptics IX:Cannabinoid systems and cannabis X: Opioids XI: Ethanol

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The first objective is to give informations regarding the different neurotransmitter systems in the central nervous system (CNS). The final objective is to give a good understanding of the mechanisms of action of the main types of psychotropic drugs (medications as well as drugs of abuse). These mechanisms explain both the desired and undesired effects of these substances.
