The internships that are organized in the 2nd year of the bachelor's degree in Oral Hygiene are observation internships (passive internships) or active internships. They aim to familiarize the student with his future professional environment. During passive internships, the student will observe how a dentist specializing in one of the fields of dentistry manages his schedule (respecting schedules), takes care of his patients (listening and communicating with patients, order of treatment priorities engaged), carries out the necessary care (anticipation and difficulties), completes a medical file (anamnesis, care performed, etc.). The hygienist trainee will actively participate in the reception of the patient and will ensure to assist the dentist in his care activities (4 hands work). Under the supervision of the room staff, the trainee will prepare the equipment and biomaterials necessary for the realization of the various treatments provided by the dentist. He will also apply the rules of asepsis and cleanliness necessary in a dental office. Finally, he will acquire the basics of sterilization by clearing the treatment tables himself and taking advantage of the advice and instructions of the sterilization staff. Although the observation internship is a passive internship, the student must demonstrate a certain pro-activity. He will get involved, will show great availability towards the dental trainees and the room staff. Availability implies that the student is effectively and efficiently present in the room during all of his internship hours. With regard to active internships, the hygienist trainee will take care of patients under the supervision of clinical collaborators with the aim of developing their future professional skills.
