Learning unit contents

Place of culture in society.

Lifelong learning policy in Belgium

The idea of lifelong learning is a guiding thread in public cultural policy. The purpose of this idea is to aim at the development of citizenship through critical reflection and collective action. The knowledge of the past or major works, artistic taste, these are so many practices that may or may not be part of the social heritage that is transmitted to us, an uneven heritage which must be taken up and appropriated, but which helps forge our identities.
Thus it is desirable that a practitioner within the cultural sphere should understand the basis of our cultural policy and its many aspects (youth policy, libraries, cultural centers, arts...), and be able to design his or her own cultural project.

The performing arts and society

We will attempt to explain the diverse sociological approaches of the theater. We shall be interested in the audiences.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The student will be able to deal autonomously with a problem related to the place of culture in society.

Lifelong learning policy in Belgium

  • To be able to identify the concept of lifelong learning as opposed to the concept of continuing education/training
  • To be able to define one's mode of action within the framework of the democratization of culture, as opposed to cultural democracy
  • To be able to design a personal project of cultural action in relation to the aforementioned concepts

The performing arts and society

The student will be capable of envisaging a specific problem (the relation to the public, for example) by using the adequate methodological tools.
