Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The course begins with a presentation of the general theory of...

  • principles, issues and methods for analyzing discourse
  • its structural, enunciative, pragmatic, intertextual, generic, and sociolinguistic viewpoints
  • its relationship with the other fields of linguistics and language sciences.
We will then carry out an in-depth examination of different discourses (literary, media, politics, ordinary, scientific, commercial...).
The selection for the corpus is based on the students' interests or their personal projects, and the participants are expected to take active part in the analytical work.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Introduce the participants to the principles and analytical methods of discourse, and give them an opportunity to put them into practice to clarify the issues and the functioning of various kinds of discourse, or of discursive systems generally.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Some knowledge in linguistics.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The students are expected to participate actively in the discussions provoked and the practical exercises and case studies that are put to them.

This course is an "oral" course, which involves:

- the interactions between the teacher and the students, and between the students during the course, go beyond memorizing syllabus and reading books for final evaluation;

- the active presence in the course in order to benefit from and participate in these exchanges is therefore essential ;

- that the professor will develop the course based on student reactions or any other circumstances that he will consider significant during the course, so that the details of the final evaluation cannot be determined at the beginning.
