Learning unit contents

Does a "religious" phenomenon in a large sense exist for the periods prior the invention of writing ? Especially, how is it possible to clarify it without any text ?

The most ancient data are used, since the Lower Palaeolithic. All the data "exterior" to the "domestic" life are used, including collected objetcs, symbolic engravings, art, treatment of dead people, collective buildings and structures... all presented in a critical way, until the Iron Age.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

All along the course, the students will be able to think about the various ald and more recnt interprétations proposéed in this firld during more than a century.
With the modern methodological research used today in prehistory, which data are still standing ? How is it possible to summarize the evolution of the symbolic thoughts and beliefs of the prehistoric people until the Iron Age religions, well described in the texts from Antiquity ?
