Prestressed Concrete Structures:
The course on Prestressed Concrete Structures will cover the following topics:

  • Concept of prestressed concrete and properties of prestressing steel
  • Technology of prestressed concrete
  • Behaviour of prestressed members subjected to axial loads
  • Behaviour of members subjected to flexure
  • Design of members subjected to flexure
  • Statically-indeterminate prestressed structures
  • Design for shear forces
  • Design of reinforced and prestressed concrete members and regions with complex deformation patterns by using strut-and-tie models

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Prestressed Concrete Structures:

Students who complete this course will gain a thorough understanding of the behaviour of prestressed concrete members subjected to axial forces, bending, and shear. They will develop skills to predict this behaviour, including the effects of temperature, creep and shrinkage by using first principles: equilibrium, stress-strain relationships for materials, and compatibility of deformations. Using this knowledge they will then learn how to design individual structural members such as prestressed girders and slabs. Students will also analyze statically indeterminate prestressed structures by using different approaches from structural mechanics. Finally, students will gain detailed knowledge in the design of reinforced and prestressed concrete members and regions with complex geometry by using strut-and-tie models. Such members include deep beams, joints, corbels, and other disturbed regions.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Prestressed Concrete Structures:
The classes will consist of lectures and tutorial sessions with each activity taking approximately half of the class time. The lectures will provide the theory of prestressed concrete while the tutorial sessions will be focused on the application of the theory for the analysis and design of prestressed members. In the tutorial sessions the students will be shown practical examples and will work on problems under the supervision of the professor and the teaching assistant. Students will be provided with handouts summarizing important information presented in the lectures. Reference books will be recommended for additional reading. As part of the learning process students will be expected to complete a number of homework assignments.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

The teaching method will be adapted if the Covid-19 regulations change and face-to-face teaching is not possible.

The evaluation of students will be based on homework assignments and a written final exam.
If the COVID-19 situation does not allow for a face-to-face exam, the exam will still be written but it will be conducted online.

Please note: The course is delivered in ENGLISH.
The classes will take place on Tuesdays from 8:30 to 12:30.
