Learning unit contents

The Atelier-Projet course is central to the training of future landscape architects, both as a basis for acquiring theoretical knowledge and as an introduction to project practice.

The programme is designed to enable all students, whatever their previous training or personal interests, not only to acquire knowledge of the landscape architecture project, but also to contribute to the development of their intellectual openness and sharpen their critical faculties.

General theme of the BAC 1

At a time of global warming, the fundamentals and practice of landscape architects have been enriched by the environmental aspects of living environments, which form the basis of landscape expression.

Today's landscape architects must take account of the changes and major challenges facing our societies today, drawing on a sound knowledge of cultural, historical and human contexts.

The Bac 1 workshop aims to impart a methodology that will enable students to strike a balance in their approach between the natural dynamics and challenges of the 21st century and the artifices necessary for the development of our societies.

Q1: BODY & RELIEF

Q1 focuses on learning about and perceiving the different features that articulate and shape a landscape.

The workshop will provide students with the keys to understanding the components of a landscape:

- the bedrock: topography and hydrography

- the major plant structures

- the human activities that shape it: agriculture, buildings, networks, etc.

- the heritage of parks and gardens and the city.

This learning takes place through experimentation and hands-on experience in the field.

Q2: THE LIVING WORLD

The workshop will focus on the living world and its relationship with man.

The three spatial dimensions will be addressed, as well as the temporality of a project (past, present, future).

This notion is predominant when we talk about landscape, since it is constantly evolving and is never finished.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Research sources and basic documents through analysis

- Become aware of the main features of a landscape and analyse them;

- Understand a place and grasp its potential in terms of development.

- Develop an uncomplicated planning study, from analysis to preliminary project, by formulating a personal vision of a place within the framework of the instructions received;

- Arguing one's choices, accepting criticism and questioning oneself: criticism, whether positive or negative, is part of the project and enables students to clarify their intentions and the development of their project;

- Master the graphic expression codes of a plan (scales, formats, graphics, symbols, etc.) and prioritise the information in their project;

- Take account of the timeframe of a project.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

None.
