Learning unit contents

The learning activities consist of preparing and performing several experiments that illustrate the physico-chemical, analytical and structural aspects of spectroscopic methods. The students are invited to synthesise and characterise different molecular systems by spectroscopic methods, as well as to extract physico-chemical information concerning different types of reactions. The different learning activities are integrated within three integrated projects, each of them relying on different spectroscopic methods.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By completing the integrated spectroscopy laboratory sessions, students will be able of:

(a) following a synthesis protocol in order to obtain a molecule of interest for spectroscopic characterisation;

(b) discussing, and modifying if needed an experimental protocol from the literature in order to obtain useful spectroscopic data;

(c) possibly proposing alternative experimental protocols, involving a certain degree of understanding of the techniques available to the students;

(d) performing computational chemistry to determine the optical properties of conjugated molecules in different solvents as well as the dissociation energy of aromatic esters;

(e) processing the collected spectroscopic data in order to extract useful information for the study of physico-chemical parameters affecting the studied reaction: including kinetic constants, energy barriers, energy diagrams;

(f) presenting scientific data from various spectroscopic methods (talks and writing).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The laboratory experiments are performed by groups of 2 to 3 students. Each group is formed by random draw during an introductory session, and is assigned three original molecular systems (1 per integrated project). Each student records his/her observations and results in a laboratory notebook. A work schedule, specific to each group, is provided to the students at the beginning of the laboratories and will be adapted according to the progress of the groups. This schedule considers the possibility of reproducing rambling experiments.

A series of meetings with the teaching staffs are organised to support the students in their work. One session is dedicated to the use of data processing software (such as Excel, MNova, Gaussian).

The planning of the experiments, the state of progress and the presentation of the results are discussed during group meetings, organised once or twice a week during the integrated laboratory sessions. These group meetings simulate research laboratory group meetings and allow the exchange of ideas between supervisors and the students. Students are expected to present their results and week planning as a PowerPoint presentation.

An office workspace is accessible for all groups of students to process their data during the laboratory sessions to promote research cooperation and exchange.

The evaluation is established on the basis of the attitude and the work in the laboratory as well as the keeping of the laboratory notebook, the oral presentations of the group as well as a written report.
