Learning unit contents

This post graduate course consits in a multidisciplinary teaching in the frame of a interuniversity programme in aquaculture and fish farming.The main bacterial, viral and parasitic diseases of fresh water fishes are described as well as their treatment and prophylaxis. A section deals with the use of drugs against fish pathogens and their potential impact on the environment and food safety.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The goals of the course are as follows: description of the main biological groups responsible for different infectious and parasitic diseases in fresh water fishes, their identification and biological characters. This is followed by the pathogenesis, clinical signs and differentail diagnosis of these diseases as well as their treatment and prophylaxis.
In the end, the student must be able to apply the knowledges to diagnose a specific disease when confronted with a suspicion of infectious or parasitic diseases especially in the context of fish farming.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The prerequisites include general biology, physics and chemistry, cell biology, animal physiology and anatomy, pathology, ecology, toxicology and pharmacology.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The practicals are taking place in the experimental unit in Tihange where a fully equipped practical room is available. A special attention is given to the microscopical identification, staining and culture of the commonest bacterial and parasitic agents found in commercially raised fresh water fishes.

Lectures are presented with Powerpoint slides.

Recommended or required readings

Lecture notes (powerpoint) are provided by the professor.

A "multiple choice" exam is organized after the last lecture.
