Contents: - Practical comprehension and listening exercises and note-taking based on authentic recorded material in UK and US English.
- Practical comprehension exercises in reading texts and styles with different contents,  summary, critical comment, lexical and cultural exploitation. 
- Exercises on word definition and paraphrasing
- Initiation to anglophone culture through the texts discussed in class.

English language in practice

By the end of the year, students will be able to:

- summarise and critically comment on texts with various styles and contents (to develop one's ability to synthesize, criticize and analyze)

- define certain words from the text, find their synonyms, antonyms and summarise paragraphs.

- understand authentic recorded material

- be at ease with the Anglophone vocabulary and culture required to understand written and spoken media (history, politics, economics, a range of socio-cultural material, news, ...)

-do research to understand the cultural references mentioned in the texts and listening comprehensions analyzed in class (to develop personal research skills)

Good command of the English language, with the knowledge of grammar and vocabulary necessary to understand and criticize complex texts.

Additional information:

Assessment in January: exempting written exam based on a text which has not been discussed in class, in close connection with the themes covered throughout Term 1. The written task(s) will include a summary and/or open questions on the text. If passed (> or = 10/20), this exam will account for 35 % of the final grade in June.

Assessment in June (35%): written exam based on Term 2 course content (course pack and video links). A listening comprehension exercise on the themes discussed in class might be included.


Oral assessment in June (30%) : Students should individually prepare the readings assigned by the instructors. 

Novel (to be determined) and/or a selection of texts available at the beginning of T2.

Students who have a grade below 7/20 will not be allowed to take the oral exam.




This course is part of a teaching unit ("Unité d'enseignement," or UE) which is subject to the principle of the "note absorbante," which means that the student having obtained a mark below 8/20 for one of the learning activities ("activités d'apprentissage," or AA) will receive a failing grade for the entire unit and will have to retake the failed AA in the second session regardless of the mathematical average of the two AA grades
