Learning unit contents

Students enrolled in the master's degree in Sustainable Management of Energy must prepare
a dissertation. This is a personal research work, in relation to environmental sciences and
management, carried out under the supervision of a promoter, and which will be the subject
of a written report and a oral defence. The subject of the thesis work can be developed by the student in consultation with a
promoter and/or chosen from among the proposals communicated by the promoters to the students
. In agreement with the promoter, it can be associated with an internship in a host
organization, the internship will then constitute the "field" of the thesis. Since a
dissertation is an academic exercise, it is separate from any internship report that may be
requested by the organization or within the framework of another training course, and must
therefore be written separately. The thesis is produced under the direction of a promoter and possibly a co-promoter. The
promoter is preferably a member of the Department of Environmental Sciences and Management
and assumes responsibility for the proper keeping of the dissertation. The co-promoter can be
a person outside the Department or ULiège. The role of the supervisor(s) is to clearly define
the objectives of the work no later than the start of the second semester, and to assist the
student in carrying it out throughout this semester. In the case of a promoter/co-promoter
tandem, the latter act in concert throughout the duration of the work and for the definition
of the objectives. Any thesis subject as well as the name of the promoter must be communicated to the jury on
the date scheduled for approval. A working title must be provided at this time. The thesis reading committee, made up of 3 to 5 people (including the promoter and possible
co-promoter) chosen for their expertise, is appointed by the jury on the proposal of the
finality coordinator in consultation with the promoter, then communicated to the Board of
Faculty on the scheduled date. A member of the reading committee who could not attend
the presentation of the thesis, will submit a brief written report to the president and
the secretary of the jury, at the latest the day before the presentation.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The dissertation is a personal work which represents the culmination of the student's
journey, it allows him to develop his initiative and particular interests. It tests the
student's ability to plan and undertake original work in compliance with the rules of the
art, by mobilizing the skills acquired through the various lessons of the master's degree
in environmental science and management. It offers training in methods of professional
diagnosis and intervention - for example, carrying out an inventory, collecting and
analyzing data - and the opportunity for quality independent work. It aims to develop the
student's critical thinking and scientific spirit.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The promoter may recommend that the student take one or more courses in order to acquire
all the skills necessary to carry out the work.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

These activities will be defined on a case-by-case basis in consultation with the promoter.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face course

Additional information:

It is the student's responsibility to submit the progress of their work to their supervisor
for an opinion, at all stages and on a regular basis. The promoter can establish a timetable
and/or specifications defining the objectives targeted in the context of the work and the
progressive deadlines for its achievement.

Editorial instructions will be given by the person responsible for the purpose or the promoter. The student is required to respect the faculty rules relating to the cover of the dissertation, the copyright notice validated by the Board of Studies, and good practices
in scientific writing, including in terms of bibliographic referencing.

Recommended or required readings

If necessary, the promoter can recommend the reading of articles and/or scientific works
allowing the student to deepen his knowledge of the subject.

Exam(s) in session

Written work / report

Additional information:

The evaluation of the dissertation is based on two methods: the writing of a scientific
text reporting on the original work carried out (the dissertation itself) and an oral
presentation and defense (the dissertation defense). The text of the thesis must be submitted in electronic format, no later than the submission
date set by the Board of Studies, on the institutional site relating to theses, MatheO.
The deposit must be initiated [1] by the student no later than June 1st for the 1st session
and August 1st for the second session. It is the student's responsibility to find out from
the members of the reading committee if they require a paper version, and to provide it
to them if they request it. The dissertation is publicly defended [2] before the members of the reading committee, on
the date set by the Studies Council. The defense includes an oral presentation followed
by questions from the reading committee and the public. The duration of the presentation is
20 minutes maximum, and the entire defense lasts 45 minutes. Assessment focuses on the above learning outcomes, through text and dissertation defense.
The overall rating is composed for 2/3 of the rating assigned by the reading committee on
the basis of the quality of the manuscript and the work carried out by the student
throughout the academic year, 1/3 constituting an appreciation for the oral presentation
and answers to questions. The rules relating to plagiarism are applicable in the context of a dissertation.

[1] Initiating the deposit means that the student must register on the MatheO site
and enter the personal information, the (provisional) title of the thesis, the promoter,
etc...

[2] Except specific confidentiality clause.

Work placement(s)

An internship is a period of activity during which a student applies the theoretical and
methodological lessons followed, within the framework of a project carried out in a host
organization and under the supervision of an internship supervisor. An internship can
therefore constitute the "field" phase of a dissertation project. The terms of the
internship are subject to an agreement between the student, the internship supervisor and
the person in charge of the purpose or promoter of the dissertation. If an internship report
is requested, it will be separate from the dissertation and will be written separately. The student is responsible for completing the mandatory documents and carrying out the ad
hoc procedures provided by ULiège before leaving for the internship.

Organizational remarks

Exceptionally and subject to the written agreement of the promoter and taking into account
the members of the reading committee, the manuscript may be written in a language other
than French.
