Learning unit contents
The objective of this course is to allow students to deal with a central theme in development sciences - poverty - through different points of view (disciplines, theory and practice).
This seminar takes place throughout the year and aims to put students in a learning posture, but also to articulate the concepts and practices seen in the course.
In sub-groups, students will have to carry out a "multi-dimensional" analysis of the poverty situation in a Southern country. To do so, they will have to mobilize concepts, tools and disciplinary approaches that they will have studied during the course (theoretical sessions and practical work).
They will have to conduct interviews with ad hoc actors, carry out economic analyses by mobilizing quantitative indicators related to poverty, and socio-anthropological analyses by exploiting qualitative data collected during interviews. They should be able to write a research report and present their main results to a jury.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
By the end of this course, students will be able to
- Understand the concept of poverty and its different dimensions
- Mobilize tools to analyze and understand poverty in a given country
- Conduct research and write a research report
- Present results
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
- Reading capacity
- writing capacity
- Articulation between theoretical framework, practical exercises, and work theme.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
During the first session, students will be assigned a country for which they will conduct a poverty analysis (in sub-groups).
Throughout the year, the students will be equipped to carry out this country analysis thanks to the intervention of several specialists in poverty issues (economist, sociologist, anthropologist).
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Blended learning
Additional information:
This course is given essentially in person and throughout the year (schedule available on CELCAT).
The first semester will be devoted to theoretical and practical courses with a disciplinary anchoring in economics through presentations on monetary and multidimensional poverty, the notion of material deprivation and inequalities.
A partial evaluation is planned for January 2023: written exam.
The second semester will be devoted to the follow-up of interventions by southern field actors and/or specialists on the theme, this time with a more socio-anthropological disciplinary anchoring. This semester will focus on "southern field" experts and socio-political analyses of the construction of the concept of poverty.
This second semester will also be devoted to collecting data for the country analysis (subgroup work).
This second phase of the course will also be accompanied by mandatory group work follow-up sessions.
