Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
The seminar aims at raising students' awareness of and exercising them in research in human and social sciences by:
- Articulating different tools and concepts around a single research object to be studied and analysed in groups,
- Developing and mastering (at the end of the seminar) a six-steps methodological and conceptual toolbox that can be transposed to any research process.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
In this context, students will be required to:
- Carry out various practical exercises in groups of four,
- Identify and define a concrete research object to be analysed,
- Progressively build a research approach based on methodological supports and references made available during the seminar sessions,
- Research and test theoretical concepts/references related to the research problematic investigated during the seminar.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
For HRM students: METO0820-1 is prerequisite.
For LS students: /
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The seminar uses different teaching methods:
- flipped classroom approach,
- group works,
- peer review,
- tutoring between students.
The seminar is participatory and dynamic. It is based on the students' opinions, reflections, and observations. Throughout the year, students will be invited to collaborate in the production of formative, summative and qualifying works in group.
In order to help students in the realisation of their research, a tutoring system is set up (compulsory for HRM students, optional for LS students). More accurately, Master 1 students will be informally supervised by Master 2 students who will act as tutors. Both Master 1 and Master 2 students will be assessed on the tutoring system implemented/monitored (for HRM students only).
Attendance at the various sessions is not compulsory but is encouraged. In case of an internship abroad, a solution will be negotiated (do not delay in contacting the seminar contact person, Mrs Massaro M., as well as the President of the jury in your discipline).
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Blended learning
Additional information:
The mode of delivery of this seminar is hybrid (combination of face-to-face and distance learning activities) via the tools of the Ultra platform (formerly eCampus).
These conditions are subject to change according to sanitary conditions.
Recommended or required readings
The course content (slides, video clips, etc.) and compulsory readings are available on Ultra (formerly eCampus).
Exam(s) in session
Any session
- Remote
written exam ( open-ended questions ) AND oral exam
Written work / report
Continuous assessment
Additional information:
The seminar is based on several modes of evaluation:
- Remote assessment,
- Written and oral assessment on a scientific article,
- Continuous assessment through various group works and peer reviews,
- Assignement - report.
The final evaluation of the seminar is based on three modes of evaluation via Ultra (formerly eCampus):
- The oral and written presentation of a scientific article - theoretical or methodological - by groups of four students: 5 points of the final seminar grade.
- The peer review of the six intermediate exercises due on the indicated dates (see calendar in the course material): 12 points of the final seminar grade.
- The self-assessment for the individual mark to be handed in on the first day of the examination session (first and second sessions): 3 points of the final seminar grade.
Work placement(s)
For HRM students, the internship will take place in the second year of the Master's program during the second semester for 60 days (4 days/week).
For LS 120 students, a first observation period of 20 days will be held during the first year of the Master. Then, a practical training of 27 days will be held during the second year of the Master.
