Learning unit contents
This course begins with the presentation of the classifications of the main behavioural and cognitive animal models, and the explanation of the concepts of validity, analogy and homology, used to evaluate and improve them (E. Tirelli).
It will continue with an overview of the main behavioural and cognitive tests - functional animal models - used in basic or preclinical research. Some of them will be detailed: anxiety, motivation, learning and memory, cognitive flexibility, etc. (A. Ferrara).
The possibilities of integrative animal models related to alcoholism (E. Quertemont) and to a brain pathology (integrative model - A. Ferrara) will then be presented in a more specific way; the notions of validity and preclinical translational research will be highlighted.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
To understand where the interest and contribution of cognitive and behavioural animal models lie (without neglecting their limitations and drawbacks) in psychology, neuroscience and pre-clinical research.
