Learning unit contents

This class includes three parts:

  • fossil animals
  • fossil plants
  • micropaleontology

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Fossil animals 
(i) Know the nature and biases of the Metazoan fossil record; (ii) retrace the evolutionary history and diversification of  important animal lineages.

Fossil plants
Knowing and understand the evolution of the different lineages of embryophytes (land plants). 

Micropaleontology
at the end of the class, the student will be able to describe the major steps of evolution of the three domains of life and their microscopic fossil record, as well as the challenges in evidencing the first traces of life.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Basic knowledge of the morphology, physiology, systematics, ecology and biology of microorganisms, plants and animals
Moreover, a basic knowledge in geology is also requested.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Face-to-face lectures, in French, ilustrated with analyses of fossils.
