Learning unit contents
Through a tour of Johann Sebastian Bach's work, questions relating to music theory, its history and its achievements will be addressed. After a general presentation of Bach's output, the following questions will be addressed:
1. The ritornello technique
2. The construction of the concerto
3. The contrapuntal development
4. The art of the fugue
5. Monumentality and intimacy
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Understanding Rousseau's role and strategies in theory. Based on a practical exercise: editing the Dissertation on Modern Music.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Foundations of the current theory of music. Ability to "read" music. Knowledge of the main lines of the history of human thought.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Interactive seminar. Each course includes a lecture and tutorials, case studies on historical documents. At each session, the students receive a small research which they must present the result during the following course.
