Learning unit contents
The course aims at analyzing the different phases of Pirandello's short story production in relation to the major nineteenth- and twentieth-century literary movements in Italy and Europe. In the first part of the course, theoretical and historical questions will be discussed: what is the Italian short story? What are its formal characteristics? What is the role of Pirandello in the evolution of the Italian short story between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries? In the second part of the course, we will proceed to an analysis of some of the most significant Pirandello's short stories. A particular emphasis will be given to Pirandello's prose, the typology of narrative structures and the macrotextual project of the Stories for a year.
