Learning unit contents
The course aims to define the distinctive features of the Italian short story from 1861 to 1891. We will explore works by Giulio Carcano, Caterina Percoto, Arrigo and Camillo Boito, Luigi Gualdo, Iginio Ugo Tarchetti, Luigi Capuana, Giovanni Verga and Federico De Roberto. In the first part of the course, theoretical and historical questions will be discussed: what is the Italian short story? What are its formal characteristics? How does the Italian short story change between Scapigliatura and Verismo? The final part of the module will host a reflection on the centrality of Verga's model to the Italian tradition of the twentieth century.
