Learning unit contents

The Near East during the Crusades: societies and powers (11th-13th centuries)

This course aims to critically study the history of Near Eastern societies from the 11th to the 13th century, following the first crusade (1095-1099) and the establishment of the Crusader States (1099-1291). We will examine the progressive evolution of the political, social, economic, and cultural context in the Eastern Mediterranean. The arrival of the Crusaders and the consolidation of the Crusader states were part of deep transformations within the Medieval Near East, participating in a renewal of the regional social and cultural environment, parallel to the gradual dislocation of the Seljûkid Sultanate, the weakening of the Fatimid Caliphate and the rise of the powerful Italian city-states. Without ignoring Greek and Latin production, we will focus first and foremost on Arabic historiography, to better underline the progressive transformations that led by the end of the 13th century to new social and political reconfigurations.

Each session will introduce a main topic (justice, trade, economy, religious violence, etc.) related to the history of the Middle East, while also framing the regional political and geopolitical context necessary to better grasp the history of this period. Translated texts from Medieval sources will be used as support for the course.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of the course, students will have acquired clear benchmarks on the history of the Eastern Mediterranean during the 11th-13th centuries. They will be able to understand and analyse the major historical developments of the Muslim worlds, to deconstruct the clash of civilizations' mindset and better examine questions related to religious violence during the Medieval period. They will also be competent to engage in critical considerations regarding the contemporary uses of the history of the Islamic worlds and that of the Crusades.
