Learning unit contents

Prints from the Antwerp publishing house Aux Quatre Vents

Together with his wife Volcxken Diericx, Hieronymus Cock established one of the most successful print publishing houses in Europe in the 16th century. They published and circulated engravings of masterpieces by famous Italian and Dutch painters. They also issued the first printed series of ancient ruins and sculptures. Some of the most talented artists of the time, such as Bruegel and Heemskerck, provided them with drawings specially designed for translation into prints.

This fascinating production will be approached through an in-depth examination of original prints from the Wittert Museum. The course will therefore also provide an introduction to the expertise of old master prints.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Deepening of the knowledge of European Renaissance art.

Practical application of this knowledge and of the methods specific to art history (initiation to the heuristic approach in view of the expertise of Old Master prints; training in description, stylistic and iconographic analysis, dating and attribution).
