Learning unit contents

Overview of artistic productions of the 17th and 18th centuries in Western Europe: important examples, chronological marks, contextualization. Introduction to the analysis of monuments and works, and to their interpretation from a historical perspective.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Introduction to art in Western Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries. Basic introduction to analytical and interpretative methods in art history. Learning specific terminology.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

None, other than the general requirements for the study of History of Art and Archaeology and the abilities expected of a Master student in Philosophy and Letters (for foreign students: sufficient knowledge of the French language).

Recommended or required readings

No syllabus. The table of contents, list of artists mentioned and various useful pieces of information are available on the "supports de cours" tab. Studying will also be based on the book mentioned above.

Written examination on the subject matter covered in class and on extracts of the book mentioned above.
