Learning unit contents
The course is divided into two parts
The first part (2 days) consists of :
-Presentation of the case of higher education in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation
-More particularly the case of the University of Liège and its context
-Combination of presentations and discussions
The second part (2 days) consists of :
-Continuation of lectures by the teacher
-Presentation of other cases presented by students individually or in groups
-The aim is to show what the different models are, to compare and discuss them
-Combination of presentations by students and debates

-Structure of Belgium and levels of power and skills, particularly with regard to higher education
-Situation and organization of education in Belgium
-Organization of Higher Education in FWB
-Structure of Higher Education in FWB and its evolution
-Organization of research in FWB
-Universities in FWB, the Council of Francophone Rectors and their role
-The University of Liège
- its specificities
- its governance
- its administrations: structure, role, etc.
- its staff: types, role, status, etc.
- its students
- the organization of its research and its promotion
- the importance of its third mission, citizenship, and its achievement through entities like IDCampus, VentureLab
- its strategic plan
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
We expect students to:
- Understand the different structures of higher education via examples presented by the professor and other students' homework's
- Explore the higher education structure of a specific country, analyze it in detail, criticize it and suggest improvements or adaptations while taking into account the local context
- Learn about the governance elements of universities, their objectives and missions, their organization and structure, types of staff, etc.
- Study a particular university or a set of universities of the country they choose and present an analysis including all the elements mentioned above

Depending on mobility and teaching conditions, the course can be done face-to-face or remotely.
Recommended or required readings
Students are assessed on the basis of their participation in the course presentations and especially on the basis of a homework that they must prepare in groups and present. This homework consists of analyzing the Higher Education System of a country and the particular situation of one or more universities of that country.
