Tropical forests today

Tropical forests face a significant deforestation in a context of global change. The course objective is to describe and analyze the main tools currently used to conserve and sustainably manage tropical forests. The various aspects covered are:
1. Wildlife management in logging concessions

2. Management of a certified logging company : reduced impact looging, anti-poaching activities, wood processing,...
3. Forest certification (FSC, PEFC) and legality (FLEGT)
4. High Conservation Value Forests (HCVF) and Intact Forest Landscapes (IFL)
5. Forest regeneration and nursery management
6. The Carbon market and REDD +
Other topics will be addressed according to the current events.

Tropical agroforestry

The course objective is to propose management methods to reconcile agriculture and forestry in a sustainable manner in tropical areas.

It is organized as follows:

Part I. Agroforestry

     1. Definition, advantages and disadvantages of agroforestry
     2. Classification of agroforestry systems
     3. Issues
     4. Agroforestry systems and sustainable charcoal production
      5. Importance of land tenure: application to slash-and-burn agriculture, agroforests,        agroforestry parks and silvopastoral systems
      6. Conclusions: key messages

Part II. Setting up and managing a nursery

Part III. Example of an agroforestry project: cocoa production in Côte d'Ivoire and Congo

Applied tropical botany

Tropical forests are home to many species whose identification is often difficult.
The objective of this course is to identify botanic families through vegetative characteristics. This knowledge should allow forest engineers to identify species using determination keys and reference books.

1. Identification criteria and remarkable characteristics 2. Reference books 3. Systematic (about 50 families) 4. Collection, conservation and handling of tropical vegetal samples.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

See for each of the three components.

Tropical forests today

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

- Understand and analyze the major issues relating to the protection and management of tropical forests
- Analyze the causes of deforestation
- Advice a forest company that wishes to be certified
- Understand the issues related to the carbon market
- Implement a reforestation program (planting activities, nursery management,...)
- Live in the rainforest and to adapt to local socio-cultural and socio-économical contexts.

Tropical agroforestry

After completing the course the student is expected to : ·Be able to implement agroforestry programs considering ecological and social environment. ·Be able to identify main agroforestry species and their techniques of regeneration. ·Be able to manage agroforestry nurseries.

Applied tropical botany

After completing the course the student is expected to : ·Be able to identify botanic families through vegetative characteristics. ·Be able to describe vegetal samples with adequate terms. ·Be able to identify species by using determination keys and reference books. ·Be able to collect, conserve and prepare vegetation samples.
