Learning unit contents
Buildings to be constructed part: The objective of the course is to make students aware of the multitude of systems present in most buildings, of their operation, and of their impact on the management of energy in these buildings. The course is structured around a general introduction to the challenges of energy consumption, on the presentation of heating, domestic hot water, lighting, ventilation systems, etc. It also presents methods for monitoring consumption, and presents the results of the COZEB and NZEB studies for new buildings.
The practical work consists of analyzing the systems of a home chosen by the students.
Existing buildings part: the objective of the course is to present the available solutions to implement the energy management in buildings. The course starts with the presentation of the management criteria (comfort, energy consumption, cost, environmental protection) and presents the energy management systems on a technical and operational level. Then the course examines the question of the energy demand and the technical solutions available to manage this demand. The concepts are developed from a number of typical configurations of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems. In the last part of the course, the elements concerning the in-situ verification of the energy management of a building are presented: commissioning methods, audit and performance verification.
A practical exercise is devoted to the analysis of the energy performance of an existing office building.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
"Buildings to be constructed" part : at the end of this course, the student will be able to recognize the different systems present in a house, to identify the main elements, and to understand their importance in the management of the energy within the building.
Existing buildigns part : at the end of the course the student will be able to understand what is influencing the energy performance of an existing building and to implement methods in order to check this performance in situ.

"Buildings to be constructed" part : the course consists of lectures (theory), and a guided practical work which consists of the analysis of the systems of a house of the student's choice. The objective of the practical work can be adapted for students outside the EU.
Existing buildings part : the course combines theoretical lectures (4 lessons) and a practical exercise condicted on a real case (a typical office building)
