Learning unit contents

The seminar for the year 2022-2023 is part of the "Law and Literature" perspective and is dedicated to the Italian writer Leonardo Sciascia.

Rather than examining a canonical work of political or legal thought, the aim of this year's seminar is to explore the possibility that texts other than those from legal dogmatics may shed light on certain recurrent questions of general legal theory.

The work of an Italian - more precisely Sicilian - writer will be the focus of attention. On several occasions, Sciascia, in his attempt to describe, sometimes through fiction and sometimes through essays, the excesses of his country, has tackled themes linked to the law: police investigations, political corruption, the weight of the mafia in the institutions, right-wing and left-wing terrorism in the 1960s and 1970s, etc.

Four books by Sciascia will form the corpus of this seminar: Le jour de la chouetteLe ContexteTodo Modo and L'Affaire Moro. Each student will be asked to read one of these books.

Beforehand, during the first session (8 February 2022), an introductory lesson on the "Law and Literature" movement will be given and the division of work between students will be discussed.
