Teaching in the second semester
Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
Topics : General and Organic Chemistry
- Chemical kinetics
- Thermochemistry and thermodynamics
- Nomenclature in organic chemistry
- Isomery and stereoisomerism
- Reactions of organic chemistry
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
- Acquire the basic tools of chemistry.
- Check the reasoning ability, the learning and the understanding of the topics (this aim is crucial for all the lessons of the cursus).
- The course will also enable the student to train to a high flow of content that requires personal continuous work
- The lecture is oriented, as much as possible, towards the applications to life sciences.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Knowledge of some backgrounds of chemistry of the secondary level.
Having completed Partim I (CHIM0710-1) is highly recommended.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
- 2 laboratory courses of 4h are programmed to enable the students to apply and sense by themselves the practical involvements of the theoretical lectures.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Blended learning
Additional information:
Theoretical lecture: 20h divided into 10 sessions. Depending on the evolution of the COVID crisis, the courses could be podcasted.
Training session: 4 sessions of 2h are scheduled for this course.
Remediation: 10h
e-Campus: an e-learning platform is available for helping the students all along the course. You will find there:
- lecture notes
- statements of the training exercises
- corrected exercises
- texbook for the laboratory courses
- exam simulations
- a discussion forum for asking questions to teachers
Recommended or required readings
Lecture Notes. Students will have access to the slides showed during the lessons via their e-learning interface. They will be invited to complete them during their attendence.
Reference book. Two books of reference will be proposed at reduced price.
Exam(s) in session
Any session
- In-person
written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire )
Additional information:
SESSIONS OF EXAMINATION
Written exam: 80% of the final grade (or 75% for the sudents who passed the 2 evaluations and who obtained a note that increases their final grade)
- The students will be evaluated through a written exam organized as multiple choice questions.
- Two sessions of examination will be organized (january, june and september), allowing the students to have 2 chances of success.
- This written exam will count for 80% (75%) of the final grade.
Experimental examination: 20% of the final grade.
- The experimental work in chemistry laboratories will be taken into account by averaging the marks obtained from each experimental session (~15pts for QROC/QROL exams and 5pts for general behavior, for the respect of the security instructions...).
- The presence at the laboratory sessions is mandatory. A non-medically justified absence will be automatically sanctionned by a 00/20. All the medical certificates must be EXCLUSIVELY by email at certificatstpchimie@uliege.be. Only these certificates will be taken into account. No certificate sent by email to the professor or the assistants will be considered. For security reasons, access to the laboratory is only permitted for officially registered students wearing a protective apron and lab glasses. Each student must be careful not to forget his apron and his glasses on the day of the TP. No apron will be provided to the distracted. The laboratory is a potentially dangerous place, it is strictly forbidden to drink, eat and smoke. It is mandatory to wear closed shoes, pants and to tie long hair.
- This mark is fixed for the three exam sessions and counts for 20% of the final grade.
1 evaluationsduring the semester
- An evaluation (not mandatory) will be proposed. The result of this two evaluation will never by a penalty. Only the evaluations which increase the final grade will be taken into account (5% of the final grade for). The evaluations are formative
VALIDATION OF THE COURSE CHIM0710-1.
- The global grade will be calculated from the grade obtained for the written exam (80% ou 75%) and from the experimental work (20%).
- Each global grade equal or superior to 10,00/20 will ensure the validation of the course.
- The global grade is sent to the Secretary of the jury for deliberation with two digits.
Adaptation of the evaluations in the context of COVID 19
The exams will be in presence if possible:
If hybrid session:
- exams in presence
- written exam (MCQ mainly)
- 1h30
If remote session:
- written exam (MCQ mainly)
- 1h30
- on eCampus
The staff will keep you informed, via your ULiège email, about any modification
Work placement(s)
Organizational remarks
Attendance at the course is optional. The student who decides to attend the theoretical courses thus adheres to the rules of punctuality, silence, attention and elementary respect. Mobile phones must be turned off and placed in the bags.
Rehearsal sessions (exercise sessions) are given by assistants to small groups of students. Each student must respect his group, he is not allowed to change group. Attendance at these sessions is optional but very strongly recommended. The student who decides to participate in these sessions adheres to the rules of punctuality, silence and respect elementary.
The TPs are also given by series of students and you are not allowed to change series. Presence at the lab sessions is mandatory. Attendance is taken at each session.
An absence will have to be justified by a medical certificate or an official certificate to be sent by email to certificatstpchimie@uliege.be.
In case of justified absence and only in this case, the student will have to contact as soon as possible Mr Carlo Alfonso to be able, as far as possible, to redo the TP in another series. Otherwise, a score of 0/20 will be awarded for the session not completed.
It is imperative for the student to study (review) the part of theoretical course corresponding to the topic of the TP before this one.
