Learning unit contents

Master thesis

The thesis is a substantial individual project accompanied by an internship of 80 working days in a company and/or research laboratory, in Belgium or abroad. The topic must be proposed or approved by a sponsor, who must be a member of the permanent academic or scientific staff.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

This course contributes to the learning outcomes I.2, II.1, II.2, II.3, III.1, III.2, III.3, III.4, IV.1, IV.11, IV.2, IV.3, IV.4, IV.5, IV.6, V.1, V.2, V.3, VI.1, VI.2, VI.3, VII.1, VII.2, VII.3, VII.4, VII.5 of the MSc in mechanical engineering.

Master thesis

The aim of the thesis is to prepare the student for the transition to the world of enterprise or research. The student will have to prove that he/she is capable of producing a substantial piece of work using the knowledge and skills, both theoretical and practical, acquired during the course of his/her studies. The work will almost always include a state of the art, a substantial research or implementation, an analysis of the results and conclusions.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Master thesis

It is highly recommended to take the elective course(s) that best prepare for the work.

Additional information:

The professors propose subjects for master thesis work for which they would be willing to act as promoter. These topics are established by the promoter in areas close to his/her research, or collected from companies. A student may also submit a proposal, but it must be approved by a sponsor. The student should choose a topic as early as possible, ideally at the end of the previous academic year, to increase the chances of finishing within the normal timeframe. The Faculty Board ensures that each student is allocated a topic and that the composition of the jury is correct. The student should keep the sponsor informed of the progress of the work with appropriate frequency.

Exam(s) in session

- In-person

oral exam

Written work / report

Additional information:

The assessment is based primarily on the student's report. There are no formal constraints on the length of the report, but it will typically be between 50 and 100 pages. The student will describe the context, the problem or specification, the proposed solution with an argumentation of the choices made, his/her evaluation, a conclusion and possibly annexes. The student's defence of the thesis is oral and public. It includes an oral presentation of maximum 12 minutes, a question and answer period of 10 minutes, and is followed by a deliberation. The final grade takes into account the scope and quality of the work done, the quality of the written report and oral presentation, and the relevance of the answers to the questions.
