Learning unit contents
In this course, the basic concepts of statistics are presented. Most of them have already been introduced in secondary school but this course will place more focus on the interpretation and the good use of the techniques.
More precisely, the course will consist of the following chapters:
- Basic concepts (types of variables, percentages and rates)
- Data presentation and visualization
- Data summary
- Bivariate analysis
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of the cours, the student should be able to present and summarize data in a clear and correct way. Moreover, he/she sould be able to interpret basic statistics (for example as diffused in the media) with a critical mind.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
There is no prerequisite in statistics.
However, even though the mathematical justifications are kept to a minimum, a good use of statistics is only possible with some mathematical background (equation of straight lines, areas of circular sectors, developement of (a+b)^2, ...). Most of these concepts will be revised during the mathematics course in the same semester.

- Ex-cathedra exposition of theory
- Personal resolution of exercises, with the possible help of assistants.
