Learning unit contents

The course will address in particular the following themes: - definition of epidemiology, - description of epidemiological approaches (descriptive, aetiological, evaluative) - definition, calculation, interpretation of measurements of frequency, - definition, calculation, interpretation of measurements of associations, - types of studies/epidemiological surveys, - sampling and sample size calculation, - sources of error in epidemiological studies, - diagnostic value of a test.
During the practical work sessions, exercises on the various themes listed above will be carried out using the statistical analysis software R and its various packages.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Introduce basic concepts in epidemiology. The importance of the use of appropriate statistical methods in designing public health surveys and epidemiological studies, as well as in analysing the results, will be stressed. Know how to use the R software for statistical analysis.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The student should master the basic concepts in Public health. The student must have taken the course of Biostatistique (STAT0730-2).
