The course is made of two parts :
The first part (25h) will extend the teaching of formal logic given in Logique et analyse des raisonnements (PHIL0042-1). Focus will here be put on syntactic methods (mainly axiomatisation and natural deduction) as well as on metalogical issues (simplicity, consistency, soundness, completeness). Besides, some elements of non-classical logics will be presented : intuitionist logic, multivalent logic, fuzzy logic, free logic, ...
The introduction to analytic philosophy (Bruno Leclercq) will be made of eight sessions dealing with eight important steps of the development of analytic philosophy: Gottlob Frege, Bertrand Russell, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Rudolf Carnap and the Vienna Circle, philosophers of "ordinary language" (Ryle, Austin, Strawson), Willard Van Orman Quine, contemporary debates on linguistic relativism and realism (Davidson, Kripke, Putnam), philosophy of mind (Smart and Place, Fodor, Dennett, Searle, P. and P. Churchland). Each chapter requires some readings, which will be the matter of two sessions.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
- Active understanding of the syntactic view of logic as well as of some of the main metalogical notions.
- Discovery of non classical logical systems.
- Good command of the historical development, the main issues and the special methods of analytic philosophy.
