Learning unit contents

At the University, many opportunities are offered to students to enable them to become independent in searching, evaluating and using scientific information in an "evidence-based" way. This course represents one such opportunity.
The course focuses on the following topics:

• evidence-based public health;
• public health information landscape;
• process of searching for scientific information;
• critical reading of papers;
• plagiarism and citation styles.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

• define the concept of "evidence-based public health" ;
• describe the interest and principle of different specialised public health information resources ;
• search for evidence from the scientifique literature;
• read scientific papers critically;
• understand how to avoid plagiarism and cite their references when writing a document.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

This course will include face-to-face sessions, readings and online exercises. In the face-to-face sessions, theoretical lectures, demonstrations and explanations of the material will be offered. The readings will be used as theoretical support. The exercises will be done at home. They will allow the application of the concepts seen in the course.

Formative assessments will be carried out on eCampus. Failure to perform these exercises will result in a penalty on the final course assessment.
Course assessment (written exam) will take place according to the Faculty calendar. The assessment will evaluate the knowledge and skills learnt on the course (see Learning outcomes). In order to undertake the assessment, students will need to show their ULiège student card.
