Learning unit contents

The course takes a specialised approach to contemporary Spanish literature, from 1898 to 1936. We will employ sociological methods currently in use in approaching literary texts, taking into account particularly the conditions of production and reception of Spanish literature. We will read, amongst others, textes by Ramón del Valle-Inclán, Ramón López Montenegro, Joaquín Dicenta, Emilio Carrere, José Díaz Fernández, Federico García Lorca and Luisa Carnés.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

  • Critical and informed knowledge of literary movements in contemporary Spain and their relationship with society.
  • The command of those analytical procedures which shall allow a critical reading and an informed production of scholarly works.
  • The rhetorical competence needed to present a paper with the results of personal research.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

General knowledge of the history of Western literature and methods of literary analysis. Level B2 in Spanish language.

Students are supposed to prepare in advance the reading tasks described in the syllabus.

Recommended or required readings

Students should purchase of a Spanish copy of Tea Rooms. Mujeres obreras, by Luisa Carnés.
Besides, an anthology of texts will be available at the begining of the course (on eCampus). It contains:
- Selection of romances de ciego.
- Ramón López Montenegro: ¡¡Al cine!! Caricatura madrileña (1907).
- Ramón del Valle-Inclán: Sonata de estío (1903).
- Joaquín Dicenta: Juan José. Drama en tres actos y en prosa (1895).
- Emilio Carrere: [selected poems].
- José Díaz Fernández: «El blocao» and «Magdalena Roja», from El blocao (1928).
- José Díaz Fernández: «La literatura de avanzada» and «La juventud y la política», from El nuevo romanticismo (1930).
- Federico García Lorca: Retablillo de don Cristóbal. Farsa para guiñol (1930).
