Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The course focusses on teaching students the finer points of academic writing. Students will study theory, analyse authentic academic materials and apply this knowledge to produce written academic texts.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • analyse English scientific literature,
  • produce an abstract for a scientific article,
  • critically analyse a scientific paper,
  • write a structured article.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Advanced English for Biomedical Science (taught in the second year of the Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Science) i.e. LANG5001-1 and LANG5002-1, or equivalent.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Each class requires preparation which is essential and mandatory.
There are no ex-cathedra lectures but rather language seminars in which students will be asked to take part regularly and actively.
There will be several written assignments to complete over the semester. Most of these writing exercises will be written in class, except for one which is due November 29, 2021. A mock exam will also be organized on November 24th 2021, and each student will be asked to present the subject of his or her essay on November 25th 2021.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Blended learning

Additional information:

The course features 2-hour in-class sessions (so long as the sanitary conditions allow us to do so). These sessions will be completed by a writing exercise available on eCampus and designed to help the students to prepare for the exam.

Recommended or required readings

Advanced English for Biomedical Research: Writing (2021-2022) course notes are compulsory, as is Internet access to eCampus.

Continuous assessment

Additional information:

The student will be assessed through a written exam in January (produce a written abstract of a scientific article and produce a short opinion piece on a specific subject), mandatory essay, and continuous evaluation of progress through preparation and individual assignments.
The student's overall grade (/20) will be calculated as follows:

  • Continuous assessment (general participation in class activities: mock test, writing homework, presentation of a Venn diagram, in-class writing practice sessions, etc.) - 1/20
  • Graded written assignment due on December 17, 2021 - 6/20
  • Written exam - 13/20
Students will not be allowed to sit the first session exam if they have not submitted the written assignment by December 17, 2021. For the second session exam, students who have not submitted the written assignment in December or who wish to improve their grade for it must submit their assignment (or revised version of it) by August 16, 2022.
The mark for continuous assessment, on the other hand, is always taken into account in the total grade in both the first and second exam session.
