Learning unit contents

Part 1: Dating methods applied to archaeology

An introduction will reach the dating in historical sciences that is at the heart of this domain. We will dicsuss the classical dating method in archaeology including typo-chronology (matrix permutation and seriation) and numismatic. We will study thermoluminescence and archaeomagnetism dating. Then, as a speciality of Liege University, dendrocrhonlogy will be the subject of theretical and practical seminars in the laboratory and directly on the field.
The second part of the course will be dedicated to 14C dating taht is one of the most frequent method in arcaheology. We will also reach the other isotopic methods. We will finally visit a lab practising dating method.
The seminar will be organised in two units of two and one day in order to facilitated field practice and visits.

Theory, practical activities on sites. The teaching will be organised during two days  in the Scientific station of Mont-Rigi (Waimes).The second part of the course will  take place during two days, in Paris, in a laboratory.
