Learning unit contents

The course is dealing with the processes and tools of territorial development. The analyses are developed at the regional and local scales, in order to highlight the relationships between planning and development disposals. It is centred on a prospective approach, articulating the territorial management according to its expected and controlled effects on the sustainable development of places. The course brings the theoretical bases necessary to the knowledge of the leverages effects and territorial synergies. It examines the policies and tools of planning and economic development at both, the regional level and the local level.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, the student must be able:
- to understand the processes of territorial synergies (agglomeration effects, leverage effects, ...),
- to identify the contexts where those processes can be implemented,
- to elaborate proposals able to create territorial synergies,
- to critically evaluate the synergistic capacities of the proposals.

The course integrates the theory and the exercises in a general approach where each student is directly implied via lectures and personal exercises. Personal work consists in the realization of a research where an action of territorial development is critically analysed at the light of the theoretical developments.

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral exam on the lectures (with a 20 minutes written preparation) = 50 % of the quotation.
Personal work on the basis of an oral presentation of 20 minutes = 50 % of the quotation.
