Learning unit contents
There are two dimensions to this course - theory and practice. From a theoretical point of view, we will study the relationship between culture and its "institutions", which are understood both in the sense of structures responding to a restricted set of criteria and as "symbolic fields" (in the sense given by Pierre Bourdieu). From a practical point of view, the course is divided into two sections covering a) artistic institutions ; b) the rise of the modernity and the avant-gardes.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
To introduce the problems of sociology of culture and to highlight, through concrete case studies, the dynamic relationships (but also objective constraints) which these encounter in terms of training and dissemination. The course is widely illustrated by Powerpoint presentations.
