Learning unit contents
General introduction to Earth and Environment sciences. Short history of the universe, solar system and earth. Introduction to mineralogy, crystallography and petrography (genesis and classification of rocks). General theory on internal structure of the earth and its evolution (with introduction on plate tectonics). Approachs to stratigraphy and structural geology. Interpretation of geological maps. Detailed geological history of Belgium and Western Europe. Subdivisation in agro-geographic regions. Water cycle and introduction to hydrogeology, including karstic phenomens and their consequences. Introduction to pedology and soils distribution. Introduction to external envelops of the earth and their evolution. General applications of all these considerations to architecture and construction (stones as building materials, choice of the place to build, biomimetic architecture...).
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of this teaching unit, the student acquired the basic concepts of all these different disciplines, their specific vocabularies and the thinking methods. The intention is to sensibilize to a global comprehension of the naturel environment, at all the different scales, and to have ideas about the specific applications to architecture and constructive methods.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Basic knowledges in sciences (physics, chemestry, biology, geography...).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course is given in the form of lectures, with stimulation of the audience by different questions.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Face-to-face, when allowed by the sanitary context.

Syllabus is available, as all the projections by powerpoints during the lessons, powerpoints with comments are available (also as mp4 on youtube).
Assessment methods and criteria
The evaluation is carried out according to a QCM or true/false survey of about twenty questions. If needed by sanitary context, the same in distance.
