PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

Biomedical science is currently among the fastest growing sectors around the world, particularly in research and development. In an ageing society, there is a huge demand for innovative technological solutions to provide better care to patients and to keep our healthcare systems affordable. Biomedical civil engineers are especially well prepared for an engineering role within a company focused on Life Sciences.

Medical and clinical orientation

The interface between Engineering Sciences and Life Sciences is extremely broad. Graduates therefore have one of the widest choices of sectors: hospital sector, instrumentation sector, developing medical equipment, etc.

Biological orientation

The agri-food sector, biotechnological sector, pharmaceutical sector, which include many large companies (such as UCB and GlaxoSmithKline) as well as small and medium-sized enterprises close to the world of research.

In each of these sectors, there are engineers in production, consultancy, development and research roles. However, compared with the more traditional industrial sectors, the proportion of research and development engineers is much higher than that of production engineers. Innovation is in fact the key to development in all areas of biomedical engineering.

It is, therefore, especially in this area that an engineer's biomedical education truly makes sense. We find a growing number of biomedical engineers in consultancy roles for the hospital sector, in positions of responsibility in the R and D departments of medium and large enterprises and in spin-offs and start-ups. The interdisciplinary education that biomedical engineers receive also makes them sought after by a number of traditional engineering industries which rely more and more on innovative interdisciplinary solutions to meet the challenges of a rapidly evolving technological environment.
