Learning unit contents
This course introduce genetic and socio-economic aspects involved in the organisation of poultry, rabbit and pig productions with an impact on animal health management.
Basic theoretical course for all vet students on clinical examinations and main diseases of birds, rabbits and rodents
The course is dedicated to poultry and production rabbits: clinical examinations in poultry houses and rabbitries, importance of management, differential diagnosis and prevention of main diseases (respiratory, digestive, nervous, reproductive, immune deficiencies, ...), vaccination schemes
This is a basic course for all vet students not a specialisation course.
Concerning pigs, this course will describe the main diseases of:
- the gastrointestinal system;
- the respiratory system;
- the nervous system;
- the urogenital system & the mammary gland;
- the skin.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of the course students will be able
-to understand and discuss major socio-economic and genetic issues related to poultry, rabbit and pig productions.
- to make a differential diagnosis, to determine complementary examinations and to set up a treatment for common diseases of poultry and production rabbits;
- to determine how and when to refer complex cases.
To be able to recognize the main diseases of pigs and to propose a differential diagnosis based on the main clinical signs reported. To determine risk factors, complementary examinations, treatment and prevention measures.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Lectures. Diseases are illustrated (pictures and films).
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Socio-économics : 3 hours face-to-face and/or distance-learning.
Genetic counseling : 1 hour face-to-face and/or distance-learning.
A total of 12 hours on-campus and/or distance-learning theoretical course (6 hours for Poultry and rabbits + 6 hours for pigs). Students are advised to actively take part at theoretical course especially during guided film presentation.
Poultry and rabbits : it may be required to read scientific papers and/or book section (1 per year maximum) which references will be given during the course. There may have some questions on this reading at the time of examination.

Indications of how to apprehend these videos (difference between these videos and the situation in Belgium and/or new legal obligations) will be given during the theoretical courses. The content of these videos may be the subject of specific questions during the examination.
Assessment methods and criteria
Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.
Written exam during session (June and September) multiple choice questions or short open questions.
The finale note is a global note given by the co-teachers. This note is not a mean and is indivisible. A note <10/20 has for consequence that the student need to pass again the whole exam during the second/next session.
It may be required to read scientific papers and/or book section (2 per year maximum) which references will be given during the course. There may have some questions on these readings at the time of examination (see the mode of delivery section - Poultry and rabbits).
For students who still have to pass the examination of course VETE0439 (transitionnal regime) an oral examination for the poultry and production rabbits parts of the course will be organised during the first and the second sessions. During this examination there will be a specific "new companion animals" part (see course VETE2077). Date and place will be choosen by the lecturer (Prof. D. Marlier).
