Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
The course will address the different types of lesions, their pathogeny, propagation and nomenclature, together with the underlying causes, in domestic animals.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The aim of the general pathology course is to make the student familiar with the morphological and functional alterations underlying clinical diseases. In particular, the emphasis will be put on the vocabulary used to describe lesions and the lesional pathogeny.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Courses of histology, anatomy and physiology given during the first three years of veterinary education.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
The course includes two parts:
- The theoretical course of general pathology
- Paraclinical exercises, in part in amphitheatre, in part in the necropsy room
The theoretical course is 50 hours and is given in amhitheatre.
Paraclinical exercises consist of four lessons of 90 minutes. The first lesson is given in large groups in amphitheatre and describes the general method of necropsy.
During this first session, you will be given organizational information ont the following sessions. These sessions will be adapted according to the state of health and according to the works of the autopsy room.
Organisational adjustments related to the current health context
Depending on the health situation in August / September 2021, the certification test will take place orally either in person (code yellow or orange) or online on Collaborate via eCampus (code red).
The face-to-face situation ("yellow" code or "orange" code) would be identical to that of
other years (see next paragraph of the teaching commitment).
Regarding the online situation ("red" code), you will be invited to log in at a time identified cin your exam schedule, on the collaborate platform, via eCampus with your ULiège
username and code. You will then have to choose a set of questions (Theory: 3 open questions,
one with 5 definitions and 2 others in the form of QROL; practice: 3 photos to analyze).
You will then have, under surveillance, 40 minutes of preparation to answer these questions.
At the end of this preparation during which you will have written a word document,
you will be asked to return this document by email to Professor Garigliany's address.
You will then take the theoretical part orally with Fr Garigliany and then the practical
part with Adrienne Dernier.
The theoretical and practical courses will be given online in case of orange or red code.

Assessment methods and criteria
Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.
The evaluation takes the form of an oral examination (15 minutes) with a preparation phase (30 minutes) for the theoretical part. The practical part of the exam consists in an oral examination (5 minutes) after preparation (5 minutes). A different person evaluates each part of the exam (theory and practice). The first part of the exam consists of two synthesis questions (30 points each) and five definitions (10 points). The second part of the exam deals with the interpretation and the building of an adequate lesional diagnosis based on three gross pictures (10 points each, i.e. 30 points for this part of the exam). The final, global, is considered indivisible.
Work placement(s)
Organizational remarks
The attendance to paraclinical exercises is mandatory. In the case of an absence not justified by a medical certificate, the student will not be admitted to the first examination period.
The attendance to practical works is also mandatory for students which attended the course the year before and failed to get the credits.
