Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

This course summarizes basic notions in statistics (random variables, distributions, hypotheses testing, descriptive statistics), with an emphasis on the techniques to be used for courses to be taught during the year (risk analysis, for example). Theoretical aspects are illustrated using a spreadsheet.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

A goal is to help the student to become familiar with the various descriptive measures used in statistics to summarize a data collection, and, more importantly, to demonstrate how field problems can be addressed through statistical hypotheses testing.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

8 hours lectures, with numerous illustrating examples to be discussed interactively with the students.

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

Given the small number of students, the evaluation can be doneface to face

Recommended or required readings

An electronic copy of the slides and of the numerous examples illustrating the course are provided to the students at the first course.

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

A series of exercises, similar to those worked during the course, is used as a written exam to obtain the student's score.

Work placement(s)

Organizational remarks

2 sessions of 4 hours are given. The schedule is fixed to allow master and certificate students to attend.
