Learning unit contents
A few weeks are devoted to a general and intensive review of the main difficulties of German grammar (declensions, conjugations, syntax...). Following this, we will go through numerous translation exercises having to do with history, art history, philosophy, etc.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of this course, students must be capable of translating a text of average difficulty. To achieve this objective, students must ensure they learn the specific basic vocabulary.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Participation in the course is difficult for students with no knowledge of German. We strongly recommend that any students with little knowledge of German should participate very actively from the beginning of the course.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
One text and/or numerous sentences to be translated every week.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Duration and period: 45 hours in the 1st and 2nd quadrimesters. Times: Tuesdays 12:15 to 13:45.
Organisational adjustments related to the current health context
In case of a return to the green code situation, the class will be given face-to-face. However, a part of the exercises will be made available online. In a yellow code situation, we will add a possibility of online broadcasting for the students who are unable to attend the class due to their health condition. In a orange or red code situation, the class will be held entirely online.

L. Gerrekens/C. Letawe/N. Seron : Allemand. Lire les textes. Deuxième édition, revue et actualisée. De Boeck 2017. (This book contains an introduction to German as well as a list of exercises to be done and texts to be translated in the course of the year.)
Recommended grammar book:
H. Bouillon : Allemand. Grammaire pratique de l'étudiant. Deuxième édition. De Boeck 2015.
Recommended dictionary:
German-French/French-German : Grand dictionnaire allemand Hachette-Langenscheidt in one volume (255 000 words and expressions) 2013.
Assessment methods and criteria
Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Additional information:
Exam: translation of an unseen German text. Dictionaries and grammar books are allowed. June session.
The mark of the midterm exam in January will count for 10% of the June final mark if > or = 10/20 (the mark will have no effect on the final grade if it doesn't reach 10/20). Please note that the final exam for this course is cumulative.
