Geology, practical mapping work
This lecture concerns a practical training to geological mapping (2h)
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Geomatics
At the end of the course, the student will be able to
- handling numerical geographical data in a simple way
- understand the great principles of corrdinate reference systems
- get the grasp on data acquisition modes and their usability
Géology
The aim of this course is to introduce the students to Geology: how was the Earth formed, which are the geologic materials taht it contains, how to understand his history, which mineral resources are available.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Geomatics
Basic knowledge of geography, mathematics, physics and computer science
Géology
Basic knowledge of mathematics, chemistry, biology, and physics (level end of secondary school).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Geomatics
Various measures on topographic maps. Learning the basics of the software entitled "Geographic Information System" (GIS): handling of geographic data files and the virtual environment of spatial databases. Introduction to field survey (GNSS, etc.)
Géology
Practicals: identification of rocks and minerals, geolgical map interpretation, geological resources. 1 day of field-trip is organized.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Geomatics
Face-to-face and on the field
Individual and group exercises
Particpation to practicals is mandatory. It is required to be able to present exam.
Géology
Face-to-face and on the field
Some chapters may be managed via podcasts.
Individual and group exercises
Participation to practicals is mandatory.
No inscription required for practicals
Geology, practical mapping work
Praticals are mandatory
Organisational adjustments related to the current health context
Geomatics
All sessions will be duplicated to allow face-to-face sessions in rooms with reduced capacity.
Géology
Les cours sont actuellement à distance (podcasts), mais les TPs restent obligatoires et sont en présentiel. La demi-journée de terrain est maintenue.
Concernant les examens, pour la session de juin, un oral sera organisé sur Lifesize.
Recommended or required readings

Assessment methods and criteria
Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.
Geomatics
Any session :
- In-person
written exam ( open-ended questions ) AND oral exam
- Remote
written exam ( open-ended questions ) AND oral exam
- If evaluation in "hybrid"
preferred in-person
Additional information:
Theory:
MCQ
Both partims (geomatics and geology) are first subject to separate ratings, then the results are globalized (average) in a sole rating for the STER course. Obtaining a rating of 7/20 in each of partims is required for assigning an average. Otherwise, a score lowaer than 10/20 will be assigned (the lowest score of the two partims). Possible exemptions are granted according to the partims (10/20 minimum).
Reminder: attendance at practical exercises and written tests is required in order to present the theoretical examination.
Géology
Theory : MCQ (80%)
Practice : exercises evaluated along the year (20%)
No partial dispense for practicals.
Reminder: Presence at the practicals and at the partial evaluations are mandatory to be allowed to present the theoretical examinations.
Work placement(s)
Geomatics
One day of field work is organized (hald day: geology / hald day: geomatics)
Géology
One day of field-trip is organized.
Organizational remarks
Geomatics
REQUIRED equipment for the first practical session: ruler in mm (40 cm length); square-protractor (base 15 cm minimum); mechanical pencil (or sharp pencil); rubber; calculator (with trigonometric functions), A4 paper bloc.
The software used for other practical sessions are all open source software that students can download at home if they wish. Practical exercises are however only realized on the university's computers, not on students' laptops.
Géology
Laptops, tablets and mobile phones forbidden.
