Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

Students enrolled in the 2nd year of the Master in Chemical Sciences with a research focus will have a to carry out a research internship of five months in a university or a research center in Belgium or, preferably, abroad. The subjects of the internships offered by the host laboratories must be approved by the Jury for the Master in Chemistry with a focus.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face in a laboratory of the host university or research center.

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

Recommended or required readings

Since each internship is based on a different scientific theme, specific to the host laboratory, students are advised to ask their supervisor to provide them with a list of articles or books to read before the beginning of the internship.

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Any session :

- In-person

oral exam

- Remote

oral exam AND written work

- If evaluation in "hybrid"

preferred remote

Additional information:

The evaluation will be based on three elements:

  • an evaluation form filled by the supervisor of the host laboratory,
  • an internship report,
  • an oral presentation.
Each element contributes to one third of the final score.
The typed internship report must be clear and concise. It can be written in English or in French. Its length must not exceed 25 pages, excluding annexes. It should typically include a general introduction and a presentation of the state of the art, a description of the objectives of the work, a discussion of the results, a conclusion, as well as a detailed experimental part and a relevant bibliography.
The work done during the research internship will be the subject of an oral presentation of 15 minutes at the latest in front of a reading committee composed of three or four members (a supervisor designated by the host laboratory and two or three representatives of the Chemistry Department designated by the jury of the Master in Chemistry with a Focus). This presentation will be followed by a general discussion of about 15 minutes. The exchanges will be in english or in French. The host laboratory may require that they are kept confidential.

Work placement(s)

Organizational remarks

The choice of the host laboratories by the students must be communicated to the President of the Jury of the Master in Chemistry by the end of December, accompanied by a provisional title, a brief description of the research envisaged not containing confidential data and a jury proposal.
The internship will be conducted under the supervision of a research director designated by the university or the host research center and will focus on a specific scientific theme at the host laboratory.
Each internship will be the subject of a report and an oral presentation. These may be confidential at the request of the host laboratory.
