Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The main topics addressed in the course are the following :

- Special relativity
- Equivalence principle between inertia and gravitation
- Introduction to differential geometry
- Parallel transport and the geodesic equation
- Riemannian manifolds and the curvature tensor
- The stress energy tensor in special relativity
- Einstein's equations
- Remarks on the classical tests of general relativity

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Students are expected to achieve an overview of the fundamental principles of general relativity.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course consists in theoretical lessons covering the content described above. The exercise sessions  will allow the students to illustrate this content, and in particular to get familiar with typical calculations in general relativity.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Distance-learning, in English.

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

Recommended or required readings

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Evaluation methods will be defined and clarified depending on the evolution of the Covid-19 context.

> Online oral examination (update 10/12/2020)

Work placement(s)

None.

Organizational remarks

The exact modalities for the organization of remote lessons (virtual platform, access codes) will be communicated to students by e-mail.

The will consist in 10 hours of theory and 10 hours of exercises.
